Somehow I stumbled across this forum, specifically this thread, while doing some research into the unreleased Wolf's Rain tracks... all I can say is, "wow".  I'm pretty bummed - some of my favorite Wolf's Rain tracks are on this list.

What a shock...

I think that nothing is definitive and final on this thread when it comes to the whether or not she "steals", at least in my opinion. This is a pretty sticky topic but if you look closely music lovers do this same thing with all good artists and always find striking similarities. I believe that it does happen accidentally. You hear something good once and it sticks in your subconscious then years later a little piece of it resurfaces and gets blended into what you're writing. I think it happens all the time to all composers.

Okay it kills me. I need to know this.
Is there any Kanno's song that sounds like Liszt's Liebestraum?
Because I heard my mom's ringtone the other day, which is Liebestraum, and somehow it reminds me of one of Kanno's song. But I can't remember which one. I have a feeling it's something from Bebop, but, I don't know..

Off the top of my head, if you compress the chord progression of section I of Liebestraum, you get something with passing resemblance to "Waltz for Zizi" from OST 1. Nothing too sinister. Wink

Dude, folks are kind of wrong. Ladies and Gentleman we are Floating Through Space sounds NOTHING like Be Human.
It sounds more like Pachebel's canon.
Yakusoku Wa Iranai does sound like Going Downhill Fast in terms of the opening and the fact that they both have violins, but Yakusoku Wa Iranai is  a lot richer in terms of arrangement as it has violins, bagpipes, churchbells. It's actually a stronger song, but I am glad I got to hear the Divine Comedy and same with Russians that does not sound very much like Field of Love at all. Field of love has snare drums and an entirely different progression of violins. Russians by Sting sounds more like the Carnival is Over by Dead Can Dance and How Fortunet the Man With None.
There  are quite a few Yoko Kanno songs that do sound similar to other sounds, but not enough to say she's a sneak thief. Heck, you can say any song sounds like any song.
Take for example, a song by my favourite band in the world, Diety by Dir en grey.
Check this out!
Deity - Dir en grey

Brahms: Hungarian Dance 5 - 6 Cecchetto

It's quite cool to rip off Brahms as I LOVE me some Brahms.
So I don't know if I'm on the Oh, Noes, Yoko Kanno plagiarizes bandwagon until I have a bit more solid proof than this sounds sort of like this. Maybe some information from her?
Seems like most of her stuff is thrillingly original. I got to admit her music makes me feel sooooo
good.

Lately I've been listening a lot to selected songs from "Song to fly", and I was keen on that little piano piece called "Artisan"...it reminded me of something. Last
year I frequently listened to a collection of piano pieces by Maurice Ravel and, while I was re-listening to it today, I recalled which piece shared similarity with "Artisan". It's "Forlane" from "Le Tombeau de Couperin". But it's only a few passages and I don't think it's a striking one. Well, I'm no music critic so I can't call this a case of plagiarism. So I let you be the judges.  Tongue Do you think there's a similarity between these two pieces?

Maurice Ravel, Le Tombeau de Couperin, Forlane, Perlemuter

YK is a huge fan of Ravel and Debussy (I'm into Debussy lately, and when you listen to his piano works, you know that YK really like his music Tongue) so it's not surprising to me.
Ravel and Debussy created a new style of classical music, something more modern than Bach, etc. I think their music still fits our time ^^

Even Ryuichi Sakamoto's piano sounds like theirs sometimes ^^

I agree. I've been a fan of Ryuichi Sakamoto for one or two years till now, and he is heavily influenced by Debussy as well (these are his own words).
Just play "B.T.T.B." once, and you immediately recognize Debussy's mark in pieces like "Intermezzo" or "Chanson".

I started listening to "Forlane" and thought "Man I've heard that before....."
